I knew I wanted to do something new to me and experiment with this project, so I decided I would make a narrative based film. I have never done that before and I feel awkward writing but I think that it is an essential skill both in film making and life in general. That’s why I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and brainstormed ideas for my short story that would serve as a script. This year I realised how much family, friends, human connection truly mean to me and I wanted my film to reflect the warmth and beauty they have given me.
After some braistorming, I chose two ideas I liked best and tried developing them. The first one was based on a real experience I had with my friends, how we always planned an prepared to go skinny dipping at night but never actually did it. The other one was a story on how a few friends accidentally reached the edge of the world. I then researched screenwriting and read bits of Syd Field’s “Screenplay: The foundations of screenwriting” and tried to follow the the three act structure to structure my story. I wrote drafts for both of ideas but in the end I liked the second one better, since it had less direct connection to me, which made it more interesting for me to develop. I then refined the story and translated it. It was a hard but rewarding process. I’m proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and I ended up really liking the story I wrote.
